Biography

Chantal Backman RN, MHA, PhD holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of Alberta. She is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, and Director of the Innovations in Aging Care Research Centre (icare). Professor Backman’s research program aims to improve the quality of care, patient safety, and experience of older people within the healthcare system, with a particular focus on minority language populations. The focus of her research includes: 1) Improving quality of care and safety for frail older adults; 2) Understanding the role of nurses in optimizing quality of care; 3) Improving patient- and family-centered care transitions between healthcare settings; and 4) Evaluating the use of digital health for safer care. It uses a variety of methods, including administrative population health databases, mixed methods, and implementation science.
