Biography

Dr. Raymond Tempier is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and a psychiatry consultant at Hôpital Montfort and the Minto Counselling Centre in Cochrane, Northeastern Ontario.

He is also an assistant professor at the University of Saskatchewan, a visiting professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and a senior researcher in mental health at the Institut de recherche Hôpital Montfort (IRHM).

Dr. Tempier has been an associate professor of psychiatry at McGill University in Montréal, as well as a psychiatry consultant at several hospitals in France, Québec and Saskatchewan.

He has also been head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan and chief psychiatrist for the Saskatoon Health Region. He was awarded the Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association in 2012, and has been an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association since 2011.

He does consultations in general psychiatry, and his interests include community consultation psychiatry and collaborative care with family physicians.

Dr. Tempier’s main research interests include mental health services, program evaluation, the implementation of collaborative primary care models and psychiatric epidemiology. He is also interested in the mental health of minorities in Canada, in particular Francophone and Indigenous communities. He has developed a keen interest in transcultural psychiatry and has expanded mental health services for Francophone populations. He is actively working with a number of refugee and immigrant patients and has developed a recent interest in psychotrauma.

Dr. Tempier holds a medical degree from Université d’Aix-Marseille II, France, and psychiatry specialty diplomas from France, Québec and elsewhere in Canada. He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada since 1986. He holds a Master’s degree in community health (research stream) from Université de Montréal.

He has obtained several research grants from such federal and provincial organizations as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Canada Foundation for Innovation, le Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ) and the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, as well as from provincial governments and private foundations. He has published over 100 articles and 190 abstracts, as well as a number of technical reports, theses and book chapters. Dr. Tempier speaks French, English, German and Spanish.
